The Socionet Database
The database is a daily updated collection of bibliographic descriptions (metadata) of information resources composed by people specialised in Social Sciences throughout the world. Today about 90 % of the database resources belong to 揈conomics? The types of resources vary from archives of electronic publications to contents of online journals, library catalogues of new acquisitions, catalogues of publishing houses, etc. (see the description of series types).
One can obtain a general idea of the content of individual records of the database from the simple image presented below. Each pixel of the grey rectangle is connected with a certain document of the database. The number of pixels is approximately equal to the number of documents. To view a document, just click on the rectangle.

The records (documents) are assorted in the database using the following parameters:

a) the discipline, including "Economics" ?economic publications in English; "铐铎桕?, "耦鲨铍钽?", "镱腓蝾腩汨", etc. - publications in Russian (see the full list of discipline templates and the database section for "Economics");
b) the data type (for example, "working paper", "article", "book", "software", etc., see the full list of templates for describing different data types and the database section for the 搘orking paper?/a> data type);
c) the database section that includes the series for each pair "discipline" -- "data type" (see example for 搘orking papers?in 揺conomics?/a>);
d) the archive that includes one or more series that belong to the same institution (there is a special archive "RUS" incorporating all Russian-language series created by different institution, see the full list of archives);
e) the series composed of one or several publications/records (see example of the series "History of Economic Thought Books");
f) the publication with a unique handle which allows for unambiguous identification of its affiliation to a series, archive, data type and discipline (examples for publications can be viewed by clicking on the grey rectangle above).

The Socionet interfaces enable users to browse the database, view its content by selecting a discipline, then a section and so on or by selecting an archive from its full list, then certain series and so on.

For the sake of convenience, the documents added/updated over the last 24 hours are marked out by red colour and over the last 30 days by pink colour.

The structure and basic principles of the Socionet database, as well as some standards and ways of describing resources are presented in the Socionet: General Description section.

The Socionet database is only one in RePEc where Russian-language series are available (as of early 2003) because RePEc Western sites use only Latin-1 encoded interfaces for its version of the database.

The Socionet/RePEc database, as a distributed collection of descriptions of individual publications and other types of resources, is independent of the search, navigation and browsing interfaces. Thus, several versions of interfaces work with the database independently at different sites in different countries (see the list at the RePEc site).

The Socionet/RePEc database consists of publications (placed on different sites that belong to different institutions, which decided to join the system) that are compiled by a network robot (see Technologies section). Thus, the database is decentralised and open, it can be replenished and expanded, for example, by including new data types and disciplines. Evolution of the database structure depends on the requirements of users who include their series in the database. New disciplines and new data types appear in the database as soon as the appropriate materials are included in it.
