How healthy and fit are you? Really, on a scale from 0 to 10 (0 being a complete couch potato and 10 being a Navy seal) where are you?

A few weeks ago my husband participated in a fun event called the Marine Corps Mud Run. When he signed up for it he didn’t know what he was getting into. I must say that my hubby is in pretty good shape – he runs and lifts weights most days of the week. When he started the race he thought that his fitness level was around 7, when he was finished he felt like a “3.” Why am I telling you this? First of all I want to take part in a Mud Run next year (the idea of running, getting over obstacles while covered in mud for a good cause has some masochistic appeal to me), but also it means that I have to work hard to get my fitness level up.

We often think that we are in pretty good shape and we do not need any change in our lifestyle. This might be true for teenagers and young adults but with each year of sedentary lifestyle your health level degrades. I will never forget my first serious back pain. I never knew what it meant to not be able to get up, bend or pick up a small object until I injured my back a few months ago (and I am only 25!). After 2 weeks of pain and suffering I understood that it was time to change something in my lifestyle. It was time to step it up a notch and get my body in shape it deserves.

It is interesting how we all adjust to live in a certain state of equilibrium. We might not be quite happy with how we look or we might know that our lifestyle requires some improvement but we are still comfortable in our present condition. We live according to the “Why fix what is not broken?” mentality. The truth is that sooner or later something will break and we can just hope that it won’t be too late for us to fix it.

Our mental and emotional balance is a combination of hundreds of factors. The way we treat (or mistreat) our bodies also greatly depends on our emotional balance but we are not here for a psychological analysis. One day you feel at peace with yourself but then something happens and you feel lost. The factors that push you out of balance can be external or internal. Just some of the examples are:
