Jeff Rose
Hi, I’m a software developer, graduate student, open-source hacker, rookie live-coding musician, hiker, biker, skier, salsa dancer, and cook. I studied computer science at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and then after a bit of industry time I decided to go back to grad school which brought me to the University of Lugano in Switzerland to pursue a doctorate studying distributed systems and peer-to-peer networking with professor Antonio Carzaniga. After three years in Lugano, I moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where I was a visiting researcher at the Vrije Universiteit collaborating with professors Maarten van Steen and Spyros Voulgaris.

I’ve had the fortune of working on a wide range of projects, (in no specific order) a facial recognition based image organization, medical software for a bacterial anti-biotic susceptibility testing system, a live-stock and breeding management system, a number of PHP and Ruby on Rails based websites, a distributed rendering farm for evolutionary art, a sensor network operating system and network stack, discrete event simulators for P2P network modeling, a virtual machine for embedded systems, a distributed graph database query engine, and an audio synthesis system for musical live-coding. Besides academia I have worked in industry as a developer, architect and consultant.

When I was a kid I lived in Mexico city for a year with another family, practicing Spanish and getting engrossed in science fiction. I learned to love the outdoors from my fly fishing dad and the boy scouts. I did a lot of kayaking and worked as a white-water rafting guide for two seasons on the Arkansas river in Colorado, and during my undergrad years I took a year off of school to backpack and climb in South-East Asia for 7 months. Living in Ticino, Switzerland I’ve been able to ski and climb all over the alps. I crave nature, plants, trees and especially vegetables.

Life is a GraphMy recent research project involves modeling large peer-to-peer networks using a distributed graph database, so for the last few years I’ve been enthralled with the power and expressivity of this beautiful and simple concept, the graph. At some point I’ll write more about what I’ve been working on, called Plasma.
